Vocational education (MBO) is the sector where learning and working converge. Nowhere else in the education system is education provided so directly and intensively in conjunction with professional practice. This allows MBO to guide a vast number of students toward their future.
Improve the link between Learning and Working
But there’s always room for improvement. Can’t the alignment of education with the labor market be even better? Not just for young people who need extra guidance on the path from school to sustainable employment. But also for pre-university and senior general secondary education (HAVO) students who want to learn a real trade. Because learning a real trade offers future prospects, not only for the student themselves but also for society: in healthcare, technology, transport & logistics, and many, many other fields.
Work agenda 2023-2027
MBO (vocational secondary education) already collaborates with businesses and professional practice in the region. And there’s always room for improvement. That’s why the 2023-2027 Work Agenda exists: empowering students to make sound (career) choices, eliminating internship discrimination, and offering more customized solutions, including for both employees and job seekers. However, further improvement requires flexibility, which is why a bill (‘vaba’) is being submitted to the House of Representatives this year. This bill offers more leeway for electives, hybrid work formats between vocational training (BBO) and work placement (BPV), the “third learning pathway,” and shortened programs.
